SYRACUSE HERO, 3-D PHOTOS ADDED TO LOST SPEEDWAYS 2022
Saratoga Springs, NY Most Super DIRT Week fans have had drivers they loved and others they hated, but everybody liked Pennsylvania-based star Richie Tobias, who led the field to the checkers on the iconic Syracuse Mile in 1992 in a rain-shortened event.
Tobias has notified moderator Ron Hedger that he will be on hand to participate in the “50 Years of Super DIRT Week” panel at the Saratoga Automobile Museum’s annual Lost Speedways program on November 26th. Other panelists will include 1999 Syracuse winner Kenny Tremont Jr, Pro Stock kingpin Rob Yetman, who has won at both Syracuse and Oswego and Rocky Warner, a Syracuse winner in both the Pro Stock and Sportsman divisions who is now a force to be reckoned with in the modifieds.
“Richie also came within a few feet of winning the USAC Silver Crown race at Syracuse and thrilled the crowd a number of times with mad dashes around the outside to win the Last Chance qualifier,” said Hedger. “Putting him together with Kenny Tremont, who won a handful of Syracuse small block races as well as the big block classic, should give us a great look back at the glory days of the Syracuse mile.”
The panel discussion, which will wind up with the group taking questions from the audience, will cap a terrific program that will also include Mark Supley’s look back at Soap Box Derby racing, Mike Zagata’s highly anticipated recollections of drag racing at Fonda Speedway and Hedger’s interview of up and coming racer Jack Lehner.
Long-time presenter Ken Parrotte will turn his attention to memorabilia in 2022, as he has recently acquired a 1901 stereoscope along with 37 extremely rare photos of the first race held at the Indianapolis Speedway in 1909. For those unfamiliar with stereoscopes, the antique device provides a “3D” view that makes the cars pop out of what looks like an ordinary photo.
The traditional “Saturday after Thanksgiving” date will again find attendees invited to bring memorabilia to share from 10:30am to 12:30pm. Attendees will also be able to check out the museum’s new Golub gallery exhibit featuring the Cars of James Bond and Nolan Swift’s famed 10 Pins Supermodified, recently added to the Racing in New York gallery courtesy of proud owner and master restorer Steve Miller. The formal presentations will commence at 12:30.
Lunch will also be available for purchase from West Avenue Pizza and Deli, a big hit in 2021. As always, museum members will be admitted to the event free of charge, with others paying the standard museum admission fee.
